Birth Control

What percentage of women get pregnant while using birth control?

  • While condoms do assist in preventing the contraction of certain STDs, there are three STDs that are contracted more easily:
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus) – primary cause of cervical cancer; no contraceptives protect against it
  • Chlamydia- most prevalent STD; use of hormonal contraceptives increases the risk of contracting Chlamydia
  • HIV/AIDS – contraceptive use creates a genital environment that makes contracting HIV easier

Can STDs be fatal?
Yes. However, most STDs are not fatal when treated properly. Symptoms of viral STDs can be treated, but they recur and are infectious for life. Men and women who have any STD are up to five times more likely to contract HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
